Ortom to expend N75M to renovate Governor’s Lodge

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

The Benue State Government is to expend N75. 8 million on the renovation of the Governor’s Lodge through direct labor.

Governor Samuel Ortom has not relocated to the official residence which was built by the immediate-past Governor Gabriel Suswam on grounds that it must be renovated first.

The residence, a state of the art edifice located inside the government house, now christened ‘Peoples’House’, also houses a gigantic conference hall that was commissioned by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Special Adviser to Governor Ortom on Media and ICT Mr. Tahav Agerzua said the renovation would enable the Governor to move to his official residence and put an end to security concerns and inconveniences with the present situation in which he resides in his private house.

A Makurdi resident lamented over alleged wasteful spending of the present administration in 100 days.

“Why spend such money on renovating the lodge. I have seen the lodge and I think it is a befitting edifice comparable to any in the world. It does not require any renovation at the moment. This government is just wasting money on frivolities”, Mr. Eugene Agbe, a public commentator decried.

Another concerned citizen, Mr. Samson Udu questioned, does this government have any agenda? We have witnessed a lot of wasteful spending like purchase of Toyota Corolla cars for the 23 local council chairmen worth N7.4 million each, purchase of Prado Jeeps worth over N19.5 million, allocation of N1 billion to the office of the Secretary to the State Government in addition to N10 billion loans and another proposed N5 billion loan. This is not what the governor promised to do. Civil servants salary arrears have not been cleared and local government are unable to pay their staff. Ortom has to do better than this”
